Our Story
Introducing WKAPSS Founder and Chair
Hello, my name is Claudia Goodman.
Most of my career has been spent teaching in the field of special educational needs, as a SENCO and with the Specialist Teaching & Learning Service. I have worked in both mainstream state and independent schools in both primary and secondary sectors as well as in a variety of special schools.
I am a qualified dyslexia teacher and have also worked 1:1 in schools with autistic children, those with speech and language difficulties and children needing social and emotional support. I have also taught excluded children in their own homes.
My first job was at one of the largest special schools in the country in Walthamstow where I was mainly involved in observing and assessing pre-school children. The training and experiences gained here and later as a Home Liaison Teacher were invaluable. The focus was on early intervention by visiting families at home, supporting parents to help their children thrive, learn and develop, socially and emotionally, through play.
Qualified as a dance teacher, an evening job in adult education, eventually led to running the dance and sports department at the Camden Institute, North London. Here, I also enjoyed teaching creative movement and improvisation to groups of young people and adults with a variety of additional needs.
Recently retired, I’m married with three sons. My middle son, Matthew, now 37 years old is autistic with a language disorder and a learning disability. He was diagnosed at Guy's Hospital aged 3.

How it all started
One parent attended our first meeting at the Hutch Deli in January 2020. This rapidly grew. In February, eighteen interested parents came along, squeezed tightly into the back room of the Deli. We have since been fortunate to be offered the use of St Peter’s Church Centre in Ightham for our monthly meetings.
With some experience of leading autism support groups through previous work, I was aware of the impact this kind of support can offer. Attending a small support group myself when Matthew was 6 years old was a life-changer. I felt less alone and isolated. This further ignited a 'spark' to support others - realising the importance of being able to share mutual concerns and learn from other family's experiences as well as from professionals and experts in the field.
We formed a WhatsApp group and in 2025 moved it to a WhatsApp Community with sixteen sub-groups, each one focusing on a different age group or highlighting an area of need or interest.
Parents face daily struggles and challenges; raising an autistic/neurodivergent child has a long-term and massive impact on the whole family. I believe we need to enable our children to reach their full potential and to live happy, meaningful and fulfilling lives. Empowering parents is key to this.
In May 2023, I was honoured to be nominated and awarded ‘Coronation Champion’ for my voluntary work with WKAPSS.

West Kent Autism Parents’ Support Society
In November 2023 we became a Society and now have over 450 members in West Kent.
I am very grateful for the support of all committee members:
Henry Raschen (Treasurer)
Jane Miles (Secretary)
Claire See (Membership Officer)
Louise Douglas (Events Officer)
With great teamwork, each member of the committee has made a huge difference to what we are able to provide and the quality of our service. Thank you to all the committee.
Robert Culver (IT Advisor)
We are grateful for Robert's support and advice in addition to his monthly attendance at meetings. Most of all, many thanks for helping create this website.
All our funding comes from donations.
We arrange monthly talks and presentations, engaging a variety of speakers. Coffee mornings, evening socials and occasional activities for families and children also prove to be popular.
If you live in West Kent and feel the above would be helpful, please get in touch with us via our contact form.
Best wishes
Claudia & the WKAPSS Team
